Rachel Minnery attends, but doesn't FLASH charrette
On January 23rd and 24th in Orlando, Florida the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH) convened a group of architects, educators, engineers, manufacturers and disaster experts from across the nation, including Architecture for Humanity, to discuss resilient design strategies at the North-South Design Charrette. Organizations participating included the AIA Disaster Assistance Committee, the AIA Housing Knowledge, Simpson Strongtie, State Farm and others. Participants had all faced the challenges of rebuilding in post-hurricane situations and were eager to share with the group what they’ve learned from these experiences to improve how our built environment can better weather future disasters. To kick-off the working session, the crew toured A Tale of Two Homes, the Stormstruck attraction at Epcot Center, which exhibits the impacts of a hurricane on a typical home next to one designed to Fortified for Safer Living Standards Guide. After the tour, David Perkes, head of the Gulf Coast Community Design Studio (GCCDS) in Biloxi, Mississippi facilitated a discussion and charrette that generated a number of ideas for an education-based set of materials and methods that would help designers and architects integrate resilient building strategies into their everyday practice -- whether it be renovations, retrofits or new construction. The charrette kicked off an effort led by FLASH and the GCCDS, with guidance from collaborators, like Architecture for Humanity, to develop a resilient design guide for architects to use in high wind and water hazard-prone areas. In the closing days of October 2012, Hurricane Sandy carved a path through the Caribbean before moving up the Atlantic and turning inland at New Jersey, striking many coastal towns. The storm moved north and created a storm surge that devastated the New York/New Jersey Metro area. The event caused major damage and loss of life.
