Students Rebulid Haiti Schools update, October 11, 2011

The rural Dignité school approaches substantial completion, while several site setbacks have challenged our team's mettle...and their conception of neighbors.

École La Dignité - Trusses and roof have capped the classroom addition and a layer of crepissage is now coating the walls, bringing Dignité nearly to 'substantial completion.' What remains? Installation of the bamboo screens beneath the roof, over the windows, as well as the hanging of secure doors and introduction of furnishings and a splash of paint.

École Elie Dubois - Classes at Elie Dubois started last year, and it's felt like a short summer on site. While Building 2 has been demolished and materials sorted, several surprises beneath the soil have held up the start of construction. The AfH team brought around some sturdy tents to complement the reinforced UNESCO classrooms while construction proceeds into the school year.

Collège Mixte Le Bon Berger, Montrouis - The first course of block has been laid on the newly-poured second floor slab. A lot of coordination is required to make such a huge pour while all the concrete is still liquid, let alone when all that is passed up a ladder in buckets.

École Baptiste Bon Berger, Pele - The perimeter wall was found to be structurally unsound and requires replacement. The crew has demolished the old perimeter wall and have new drawings for that wall's replacement–all the more tricky as it abuts buildings on every side in its dense urban context.

Institut Foyer du Savoir - The foundations of the school are demanding deep trenches to get through loose soil.
