Are you ready for some football?
Later this week the first of a number of Football for Hope Centres opens. The center, located on the outskirts of Cape Town in Khayelitsha, was designed by local architects ARG Design, engineered by Henry Flanagan and Associates Engineers and built by Drucon Building and Roofing. Additional support from VPUU and LDM and the team of Architecture for Humanity design fellows and staff.
When opened a mini tournament between 8 teams will take place with a slight twist - no referees. Teams will negotiate their own rules for each game in order to promote communication, understanding and respect. The mixed-gender teams will represent organizations from the Football for Hope movement that are using football to effect social change. Khayelitsha is just the beginning with a second ceremonial laying of a foundation stone held in Mali this September.
Stay tuned for celebration pictures, South African style, in the coming days.
