In partnership with The Center for Green Schools at the United States Green Building Council, Architecture for Humanity invites you to join thousands of people around the world who will take action in their communities in support of healthy, sustainable schools for this year's Green Apple Day of Service.
Green Apple is a global movement to put all children in schools where they have clean and healthy air to breathe, where energy and resources are conserved, and where they can be inspired to dream of a brighter future.
On September 19, 2012, advocates from around the world, including students, teachers, parents, elected officials, organizations, companies and more, will come together in support of healthy, sustainable schools by taking action in their communities. To find an inspiring way to participate -- including energy and water audits, murals, community clean ups and more -- be sure to check out these Green Apple Day of Service project ideas!
How You Can Get Involved
San Francisco Bay Area Opportunities
In partnership with the San Mateo County Office of Education, Architecture for Humanity is calling for volunteer architects and designers to facilitate student-led classroom energy audits in Burlingame, CA schools as part of the Green Apple Day of Service. Volunteers will work directly with a small team of high school and/or continuing education students to conduct energy audits of local elementary schools.
This is an exciting opportunity to introduce students to the design profession and to the merits of green building and environmental leadership. The results of these energy audts will be critical in helping Burlingame school leaders to assess their facilities maintenance needs. With your help, communities will be better positioned to make informed green building investment decisions and students will have a critical learning and leadership opportunity. To sign up, please contact Zac Taylor, Program Coordinator, at zactaylor@architectureforhumanity.org.
Opportunities Beyond the Bay Area
Outside of the San Francisco Bay Area? No worries. Find a Green Apple project in your community or pledge to do your own. Whether it's hosting a discussion about the importance of healthy schools or starting a recycling program at your local school or campus, your action can make a difference!
Why Act?
A quarter of all Americans walk through the doors of a school every day. Yet instead of walking into places of opportunity, millions enter buildings where the air they breathe is filled with toxins and mold, where classrooms are poorly lit and overcrowded, and where resources are limited and outdated. Too many of our children are learning in buildings that are compromising their health and ability to succeed.
Our kids deserve better. Where they learn matters.
About Green Apple
Green Apple is an initiative of the Center for Green schools at USGBC to put all children in schools where they have clean and healthy air to breath, where energy and resources are conserved, and where they can be inspired to dream of a brighter future. We know how to create high performing schools that save hundreds of thousands of dollars and provide safer learning environments for our children.
