Regional Program Manager


Type: Full-time (minimum 2 year commitment)
Location: Jacmel & Port au Prince, Haiti

Architecture for Humanity is seeking an experienced architect to manage and coordinate our reconstruction initiatives in Haiti. To be considered, candidates MUST have considerable experience with post-disaster reconstruction. The Regional Program Manger reports to the Managing Director, works with a local team and is responsible for managing and coordinating Architecture for Humanity's design and reconstruction initiatives regionally. This includes supporting and overseeing the work of design fellows, visiting design teams, and local architects and/or acting as the site architect as necessary. The Regional Program Manager will direct Community Resource Centers, facilitate distribution of earthquake-resistant building resources, community design charrettes, ensure that community members participate in all phases of the design process, and act as a liaison for Architecture for Humanity's staff based in San Francisco, clients, project partners and sponsors as the reconstruction evolves.

Responsibilities:

  • Direct Community Resource Centers
  • Facilitate distribution of earthquake-resistant building resources
  • Needs assessment and site evaluation
  • Establishing and facilitating the community design process
  • Working with local architects, engineers, planning commission to ensure compliance with local building codes and requirements.
  • Working with clients to establish scope of work
  • Providing on-site support and supervision to design fellows working in the field
  • Providing support and supervision to design teams working remotely,
  • Overseeing the work of local architects and/or acting as the site architect as necessary
  • Acting as a liaison with Architecture for Humanity's staff based in San Francisco to support design initiatives in the region
  • Making regular site visits
  • Updating the project profile on Architecture for Humanity's web sites
  • Maintaining, monitoring and tracking project budgets
  • Ensuring best practices, facilitating the exchange of design knowledge and expertise and inspiring innovation

Commitment: 18 months to 2 years, Jacmel & Port au Prince, Haiti

Start date: Feb 1, 2010

Qualifications:

  • Candidate must be a degreed, licensed architect with minimum 10 years experience

  • Have considerable experience with post-disaster reconstruction.
  • Demonstrated project and team management experience is essential
  • Experience working with projects in developing countries
  • Expert in Autocad, Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator,etc.
  • Familiarity with HTML and basic web skills, preferred
  • Experience managing a firm and/or teaching experience, preferred

Director of Finance and Administration

Type: Full-Time

We are seeking an experienced Director of Finance to join our team and help us build a more sustainable future through the power of professional design. By tapping a network of more than 40,000 professionals willing to lend time and expertise to help those who would not otherwise be able to afford their services, Architecture for Humanity brings design, construction and development services where they are most critically needed.

This is a senior management position responsible for oversight and leadership of all financial and legal compliance, risk assessment, IT and HR oversight and management as well as strategy. This position will manage the finance staff, and is responsible for overseeing the full range of financial management systems including fiscal analysis, budgeting, internal controls, audits and reports. The Director of Finance is a key member of the executive team and will operate under the supervision of the Executive Director. S/he also will work closely with the Managing Director, Operations Manager, Board Treasurer, auditors and other members of the Finance Committee as necessary. The Director of Finance also provides strategic financial direction for project teams in the field and regional sites worldwide. The Director of Finance will shape the financial vision and strategy for Architecture for Humanity's award-winning income generating initiatives and consulting practice. Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Enhance and implement financial/accounting policies, processes, and internal controls, to increase staff efficiency and effectiveness, as well as protect organizational assets.
  • Enhance, disseminate, and manage financial budgeting and forecasting processes, to ensure alignment with and achievement of organizational strategies and priorities.
  • Recommend approval of the annual financial plan to the management team and Board of Directors, which establishes salaries, general operating expenses, program expenses, and level of funding.
  • Generate regular financial statements and analysis for the management team and the Board of Directors.
  • Provide detailed financial information to the Development team for grant reporting.
  • Invest Architecture for Humanity's cash balances and investment portfolio. Create cash investment policies and procedures, to ensure maximum return on excess cash while maintaining liquidity, minimizing risk, and providing reserves for long-term liabilities.
  • Ensure compliance, manage and as needed improve accounting processes (e.g., accounts payable/receivable, international wire transfers, monthly detailed accounting reports by program, and develop other financial and accounting policies and procedures as needed).
  • Responsible for all general ledger entries including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Payroll.
  • Direct annual external audits, including 990 and other filing requirements.
  • Collaborate with outside legal counsel to manage the organization’s legal and compliance needs, and proactively identify and resolve potential legal issues, while minimizing counsel’s fees.
  • Collaborate with Management Team to set strategic goals and objectives for the growth and expansion of the organization worldwide.
  • Manage one full-time project accountant; hire and retain support staff as needed in the future.
  • Lead technical staff to design an IT plan for the future and implement it successfully to meet ongoing IT needs (hardware and software) as the organization grows.
  • Manage the organization’s physical infrastructure and system maintenance (phone system, security, cleaning, supplies etc) with the assistance from supporting staff.
  • Manage and coordinate tenant leases, requirements and requests with assistance from supporting staff.
  • Oversee and direct all human resource needs including all aspects of payroll, time tracking, analyze and continually evaluate hiring practices, staff review tracking, maintenance of all personnel files and management of all employee benefit program.
  • Review income and expenses by program, including direct and allocated expenses, to monitor compliance with restricted funding sources; generate program reporting as required by funders; review of functional allocation of expenses booked by the finance staff assistants.
  • Support grants proposal, maintenance and reporting processes with development department.

Qualifications:

  • The ideal candidate will bring a passion for sustainable design and a high level of personal and professional integrity, excellent written and oral communication skills, the ability to communicate financial reports effectively and clearly to a broad range of stakeholders, and prior success developing effective working relationships with staff and a Board of Directors.
  • A minimum of ten years experience in finance, accounting or a related field, including at least five years management experience in finance in a non-profit context. Understanding of nonprofit management and governance preferred.
  • Expertise in financial analysis and activity, accounting, budget development, control and reporting, project and grant management and internal controls required. Experience in management of investment income required. Experience in managing and reporting on government contracts and grants preferred.
  • Extensive recent experience in QuickBooks and proficiency with MS Office, Excel etc. is required.
  • An ability to communicate financial systems in ways comprehensible to people outside the finance field.
  • Strong organizational skills, management skills, communication skills and attention to detail.
  • B.A. or B.S. Degree in Accounting, Business or related field required. C.P.A., Masters Degree in Accounting, Finance or related field is a strong plus.
  • A sense of humor, energy for challenges, flexible, self-starter, ability to meet deadlines and multi task in a fast paced environment.

Development Director

Type: Full-Time
Base: San Francisco, CA

The Development Director will work with the Managing Director to develop and engage in various fundraising and marketing programs and campaigns in support of Architecture for Humanity’s projects.>

Responsibilities:

  • Act as an ambassador and relationship manager to Architecture for Humanity’s volunteers, pro bono designers, clients, partners, sponsors and others engaged in our programs.
  • Assist in the planning, coordination, organization, and implementation of fundraising and sponsorship of Architecture for Humanity’s programs.
  • Initiate and follow-up on appropriate in-kind donations to support the work of pro bono design teams and subsidize construction costs.
  • Handle various aspects of donor recognition and develop campaigns for the nurturing of donor relations specific to Architecture for Humanity’s programs.
  • Aid in the research, coordination and submission of grant proposals.
  • Assist in the research, identification, and contact of new donor prospects.
  • Work with the Managing Director to review and pursue funding opportunities.
  • Work closely with Managing Director to set and achieve funding goals related to grants to support our efforts; undertake proposal development and management activities for funders and projects.
  • Handle work that is generally of critical or confidential nature requiring discretion and a broad working knowledge of agency policies, practices, and programs.
  • Report funding commitments as received to ensure proper tracking and handling.

Qualifications:

  • 4-5 years marketing experience with at least 2 years in the social services or nonprofit sector.
  • Experience in fundraising both through individuals as well as foundations.
  • Experience with Razor's Edge or similar donor database system.
  • Ability to prospect for and track leeds and manage relationships with a wide range of stakeholders including corporate partners, invididual volunteers, high networth donors and foundations.
  • Experience in in grants management essential, experience managing government grants a plus.
  • Photoshop, Illustrator, GoLive, Dreamweaver, Acrobat, Powerpoint,(or Keynote) Microsoft Office required.

Program Manager

Type: Full-Time

Architecture for Humanity is seeking a licensed professional to manage and oversee a portfolio of its design initiatives and programs. The Program Manager reports directly to the Operations Manager and is responsible for ensuring that all our clients benefit from innovative design. The position entails a unique mix of leadership, project management abilities and design experience. In addition to assisting clients in developing design programs ranging from architecture services, to creating design fellowships to establishing community design studios and responding to disaster, the position is responsible for developing and growing our network of designers willing to lend their time and talents to communities in need. Experience in both community design and professional practice as well as strong management and organizational skills are essential. The ideal candidate will be not only be inspired by good design but be able to inspire it in others.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • developing partnerships with community groups and other partners in the field
  • recruiting pro bono design support
  • matching clients with qualified design professionals
  • establishing, monitoring and updating project budgets
