Another on the boards from Football for Hope // Alexandra opens!
After dedicating two diligent years to executing this project, we can proudly announce that the Alexandra Football for Hope Centre is officially opened. Managed by Grassroot Soccer, the center will provide education, HIV prevention and public health services to the local community. The youth of the township of Alexandra, one of the poorest neighborhood of Johannesburg, now have access to a safe place to learn, grow, play soccer and become leaders of their community. The official opening ceremony was coupled with FIFA's official close out of the Football for Hope campaign. Important personalities from FIFA and the South African government gave speeches honoring FIFA's legacy after the 2010 World Cup and celebrating the impact of the entire Football for Hope program. A big congrats and thank you to the whole team for bringing this project to completion: Design Fellows Unathi Mkonto and George Kinuthia, the team at Kate Otten Architects, all the consultants, and the contractor, Ubuhlebethu. And, future generations will be able to enjoy the centre, basking under the shade of trees, thanks to the international design firm NBBJ 's donation for planting. As a legacy of the 2010 Football World Cup, FIFA and streetfootballworld launched the Football for Hope program, with the aim of building 20 centers across Africa. The centers are managed by local NGOs, each having a specific program. All centers address health and education issues using soccer as a tool for development.
