Ship-building companies in the affected regions moving full steam towards reconstruction!

Kitakami River, the largest river in the Tohoku region that spans north-south between the Miyagi and Iwate prefectures, has contributed greatly to the lives of people. There has been a long history of towns sprouting around the Kitakami River, with the thriving ship-making industries rising in response to the bountiful fish and clams in the rivers and the clear water helping to grow healthy crop. The city of Ishinomaki in Miyagi has many fishing ports due to its location being where the Kitakami River connects to the Pacific Ocean, leading to the development of a highly skilled ship-building industry. The first domestically-built western-style ship, the San Juan Bautista, was built in the Ogatsu district of this city, in order to facilitate trade between Spain and Japan in the 17th century.

Ishinomaki's ship-building industry suffered tremendous damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. 1,439 fishing ports were affected, and according to a report released by the Miyagi prefecture on September 11 2014, only 23% of these have rebuilt since then. Companies are still barely operating in their damaged factories not only because reconstruction is very costly, but also due to the timing of logistics with seawall construction and rezoning plans. The ship-building businesses that MakiBiz is currently supporting were stuck in their reconstruction plans as well. However, we are finally foreseeing that they will be able to begin construction sometime in 2015-2016.

Currently MakiBiz is supporting a total of 12 ship-building companies in the Ogatsu, Kadowaki, and Watanoha regions within Ishinomaki, as well as in Kesennnuma city. We will continue supporting these businesses, to help them come back as more sustainable businesses in their new factories equipped with the newest facilities by 2017.

If you have a chance to visit Miyagi Prefecture, be sure to check out the high craftsmanship in ship-building as well!

Tohoku Shien Kai

Tohoku Shien Kai (Tohoku Support Events) were started by industry leaders and businessmen in the major cities around Tokyo with the thought that they can support affected regions even from afar. On their 8th event on October 24, over 150 businessmen from various backgrounds attended to learn about Tohoku's sake industry, as well as support organizations in the Tohoku region. MakiBiz participated in this event, and spoke about our projects. We're happy that visitors had the chance to further understand the current situation of the Tohoku region, which is still in need of much help.

Ishinomaki Daily Children's Newspaper Workshop

The Ishinomaki Daily Children's Newspaper was established to help children who experienced hardship in the earthquake and tsunami, overcome their tough experiences by learning about their town through interviewing and reporting on various Ishinomakians. In addition to the newspaper, they host craft workshops for children. Workshops are led by local professionals, and encourage children to imagine the future of their hometown. In November, MakiBiz was invited to lead a three-part model-making workshop titled "Architecture and City Planning." Using materials easily accessible by children, we had them design and build resilient structures. The first workshop was "Tower that won’t fall". The second workshop was "Bridge that won’t break". Then the third workshop was "House that won’t be washed away." The children participated with more enthusiasm than we had anticipated, and came up with a wide range of creative ideas that amazed us. Perhaps an architect will emerge from the group in the future!
