CONTEXT AND PROJECT
Emilia Romagna, the region where the town is situated, was hit by a 5.8 earthquake in May 2012. Enel’s project is part of a wide reconstruction program currently being developed.
The project concentrates on an area that incorporates three different buildings. The main building, placed in the center, is an old warehouse converted into a multifunctional center. Two smaller side buildings host the Blue Cross, a rehabilitation center for people with disabilities (“Ancora”), and a blood donation center (“Avis”). The main structural damages due to the earthquake have been diagnosed in the central building; the roof appears to be separated from the building walls. The project also envisions the renovation of the damaged warehouse, with all its recreational spaces. Focus will be given to the bar within the warehouse that represents an important center for the area and the city in general and has to be highly valued. This area represents a nodal center for all the locals and also has an Elderly Recreation Center, currently being rebuilt, located across the street and facing the old warehouse.
The new project includes:
- Main warehouse to be converted into a multifunctional center.
- 2 smaller side buildings.
- Renovation of community bar, located within warehouse.

ARCHITECTURE FOR HUMANITY
The role of Architecture for Humanity is essential throughout all the project development stages. The first step is to analyze the feasibility of the project in order to design an appropriate building that relates to the existing context and the community can take full ownership of the project. Architecture for Humanity is managing the design, construction and construction administration of the school, making sure that the project represents the community’s objectives and the project is developed within schedule and budget. The role of Architecture for Humanity also consists in post-occupancy services in order to build a quality infrastructure that will be sustainable and used by the Emilia Romagna communities for many years to come.
