Architecture for Humanity is collaborating with local design and construction professionals to reconstruct the northern Japan region where the earthquake and tsunami hit on March 11, 2011. Any community would have been devastated by such a disaster – Japan was better prepared than most. However, it is in the event of disaster that communities need assistance in rebuilding. Through our network of local design and construction professionals we are providing technical expertise to help rebuild. Projects include both short and long term reconstruction projects.
We call the aforementioned short term projects “Urban Acupuncture”. A number of economic avenues were devastated by the tsunami. These financial lifelines are the engine that allows communities to become self-reliant. We are looking to help a number of local shops and businesses recover, open, create jobs, and collectively provide financial future for affected communities as each acupuncture needle influence overall health of a body.

現在、アーキテクチャー・フォー・ヒューマニティ(AfH)は、日本の建築家や建設関係者と共に、2011年3月11日に起こった東日本大震災により被災した地域の復興のための活動をしています。日本は世界の諸地域と比べ災害対策が整っていたとはいえ、今回の災害は、被災地はもちろんのこと、世界全体に想像を超える衝撃を与えました。今でも被災した多くのコミュニティが復興への支援を求めています。AfHの復興計画には大きく分けて、短期的で即効的なプロジェクトと、長期的で持続可能なプロジェクトとがあります。
そのうち短期的で即効的なプロジェクトは、アーバン・アキュパンクチュア、つまり「まちの鍼治療プロジェクト」と名づけています。地震と津波の被害を受けた地域において、多くの商店や企業の復興を援助することにより、雇用の再生を図り、ひいては町全体の経済な自立を支援していくというものです。

COMPLETED PROJECTS
Hikado Marketplace (Urban Acupuncture)
Location: Motoyoshi, Kesennuma-shi, Miyagi Prefecture
Scope: Providing mobile ramen noodle shop, snackery and community marketplace
Status: The covered wooden deck made of salvaged timber from tsunami was completed in June 2011. The owner, carpenters and all parties involved making this reality had a big opening celebration in July 2011. In the beginning of August, People from three neighboring communities had a very successful summer festival.
ひかど市場(まちの鍼治療プロジェクト)
住所:宮城県気仙沼市本吉町
概要:屋台とコミュニティ市場の建設
近況:地域住民の集いの場として、津波の被害を受けた家屋の材木を再生した屋根付きデッキが、ひかど食堂の敷地内に２０１１年６月に完成しました。７月には、オーナーさんや大工さん並びに地域の方々など、このプロジェクトを成功させるために働いてくれた人々と共に、オープニングセレモニーが催されました。また、８月の初めには、この市場のすぐ近くの海岸で、３つの近隣地域と合同の夏祭りも行われました。
Ohya Green Sports Park
Location: Kesennuma-shi, Miyagi Prefecture
Scope: With our partnership with Nike Japan and a generous local farmer who donated his land, we provided local students who lost their school yards for temporary housing units to play safely.
大谷グリーンスポーツパーク
住所:宮城県気仙沼市
概要: ナイキジャパンと被災した地元の学校の教員と共同し、学校の校庭を仮説住宅建設のために失ってしまった生徒のために、生徒がスポーツを楽しめるよう小規模なサッカー場を造りました。
Shizugawa Judo Juku
Location: Shizugawa, Minami-sanriku-cho, Miyagi Prefecture
Scope: Almost every junior high and senior high schools in Japan has its own Judo team, but Shizugawa is special for having a school in the town where elementary school students, junior high students, and high school students all train together.
The original location of the school was completely washed away and nothing remains now but the foundation. Currently, the students are practicing in a partitioned part of a fishing warehouse belonging to one of the student’s family. The walls have no insulation and some of the windows are missing (replaced by a blue sheet). We winterized the space so that students can practice comfortably with bare feet.
志津川柔道塾
住所:宮城県南三陸町志津川
概要:日本の中学校や高校にはそれぞれ柔道部がありますが、志津川では小学校から高校までの生徒が合同で練習をしています。
柔道塾のあった建物は津波で流され、今では基礎だけが残っている状態です。震災後、生徒たちはチームメートの家族が所有する倉庫を間借りして練習に励んでいます。しかし、その壁には断熱材が入っておらず、しかもドアがないため、ブルーシートをくぐって中に入らなければなりません。今では仮練習場の冬支度も終わり、生徒さんたちがはだしで元気に練習しています。
Paper Crane Sculpture
Location: Sendai Station, Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture
Scope: In response of the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake, Students Rebuild partnered with DoSomething.org created the challenge to fold and mail in an origami crane, and each crane received was matched with $2 to rebuild in Japan by the Bezos Family Foundation. In the spirit of the challenge, at least 100,000 cranes will go on to become a permanent art installation in a school or youth facility in Tohoku. This huge display of cranes will be representative of the over 1 million cranes contributed by young people worldwide, a symbolic gift from students around the globe.
折鶴オブジェ
住所:宮城県仙台市 仙台駅 エスパル・スクエア
概要:震災後、スチューデンツ・リビルドは、ドゥー・サムシング・ドット・オーグと連携し、世界中の子供たちが、日本の子供たちを助けるための場を提供しました。子供たちに課されたチャレンジ（課題）は、折鶴を折って、スチューデンツ・リビルドに送り、その折鶴一羽につき２ドルをベソス・ファミリーファンデーションが東北の再建のための援助金を寄付するというものでした。このチャレンジの精神を残すために、このうちの１０万羽がオブジェに姿を変え、仙台市内の小学校や児童館に寄贈されました。
CURRENT PROJECTS
Shizugawa Fishermen's Workplace "Banya"
Location: Shizugawa, Minami-sanriku-cho, Miyagi Prefecture
Scope: A group of 15 fishermen who lost everything for the Great East Japan Earthquake would like to rebuild their workplace and warehouse (called Banya in Japanese) as their new base of the town's fishing industry, which is the key industry of the area. These fishermen were used to operate individually, but now they would like to bring in each unique experience and idea to rebuild the collective aquafarming business. They hope the return of fishing business would encourage the speedy reconstruction of the rest of the town. Once their business takes off and gets enough harvest, they would like to open a market/oyster bar next to Banya.
志津川本浜番屋
住所:宮城県南三陸町志津川
概要:東関東大震災で、全てを失った志津川の１５人の漁師さんが、町の主要産業である水産業復活の拠点となる番屋を建てることになりました。震災前は、それぞれが異なる漁業形態を営んでいた１５人の漁師さんですが、今回の震災により、これからは共同経営に基づき、各自の特色を生かして一日も早く養殖の再開、そして町の復興を目指したいと思っています。養殖が波に乗り次第、直売り場やオイスターバーを増築する可能性も考えています。
Deck at Kashiwagi Daycare Center
Location: Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture
Scope: Kashiwagi Daycare Center survived the earthquake and tsunami. Now they're accepting children from other daycare centers in the city that were damaged by the quake and no longer operational. As the result, the center needs a much bigger facility by Spring 2012. Students Rebuild and Architecture for Humanity are helping to construct the addition with a wooden deck with collaboration with a local architect and the city.
柏木保育園のデッキ
住所：宮城県仙台市
概要：柏木保育園は、震災の建物への影響は幸いにも免れました。しかし、他の保育所は被害にあったところもあり、閉園をしなければならないところもありました。そのような園からの受け入れをするために、来年の春に向けて、増築を早急にする必要が出てきました。スチューデンツ・リビルドとアーキテクチャー・フォー・ヒューマニティは、その増築の一部である木造デッキを、増築を担当する建築事務所と市の協力のもとに行なうことになりました。
Oshika House - Women's Cooperative
Location: Ayukawa-hama, Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture
Scope: This is the first place winner of the first round of Build Back Better Tohoku.
Women's Group of Oshika Peninsula Fishing Union in Ayukawa-hama in Ishinomaki is making and selling woven bracelets with fishing net strings. They are saving a portion of the sale to invest in other community-based businesses. They proposed to create a space for bracelet making and community-gathering, and eventually they would like to expand to processing and selling seafood their husbands catch.
With the General Incorporate Association "Tsumugiya", a local organization helping the reconstruction effort in Tohoku, our funding will help those independent women to contribute rebuilding back their village better.
Oshika House - 牡鹿半島鮎川浜漁協女性部のための作業・コミュニティスペースづくり
住所：宮城県石巻市鮎川浜
概要：震災後、自分達の役割や仕事を求める牡鹿半島鮎川浜漁協女性部は、漁網を使ったミサンガを製作・販売する事業を漁村での住民主導の手仕事創出・コミュニティ再生支援に特化した団体として一般社団法人つむぎやと連携して始めた。売り上げは今後のコミュニティ主導のビジネスの発展のために蓄えられている。まずはミサンガなどの現地住民が集まって手仕事を行うための作業スペースの場を作り、将来的には海産物の簡易加工を行うための調理設備、ミサンガや水産加工品など現地商品の販売スペースを兼ね備えたコミュニティスペースに発展したいと考えている。
近況：つむぎやと女性部が、石巻周辺の工務店やデザイナーとともに、現在建築デザインを考案中。
Akahama Covered Alley
Location: Otsuchi-cho, Kamihei-gun, Iwate Prefecture
Scope: This is the second place winner of the first round of Build Back Better Tohoku.
Akahama village lost 100 residents out of 900. Most of them moved into the temporary housing. Though people are expected to stay in the temporary housing for at least 2 years, they are prepared to be there for much longer as we have learned from 1995 Kobe Earthquake. (The slow reconstruction delayed victims to move from temporary housing to their own houses or newly developed public housing.) Because of the random placement of residents and the callous layout of units, the sense of community is dissipated.
The community with the help from NPO Midori-no-ie School proposed a covered alley between units built on a slope in order to connect upper units and lower units. Currently they have to walk on a steep slope, and they are worried snow and ice on the slope in winter making extremely dangerous to walk on. The residents are encourage to lend their hand for the construction to cultivate the sense of community. The stairs and roof are designed to reflect the traditional architecture as well as utilize local materials.
Status: The first phase was completed, and now we are moving onto the second phase to complete the project.
赤浜地区仮設住宅の雁木で育てる小さなコミュニティ
住所：岩手県上閉伊郡大槌町
概要：３月の地震と津波で赤浜集落は住民９００名のうち約１００名が死亡行方不明になり、住宅３００戸のうち２００戸を失い、１００名余の被災者が仮設住宅には移り住みました。しかし仮設住宅の生活の長期化が予想されるのに、入居者の無選別と住民の行き来しにくい住宅棟の配置の為に日々のコミュニケーションが不足です。
当計画はNPO法人緑の家学校が先導し、階段状に並列配置された住宅棟相互を結ぶ、アルコープ付きの雁木（アーケード）と階段を地場材と住民主体で造り、小さな単位のコミュニティの形成を担います。住宅棟は急な坂でつなげられていますが、冬場に凍り付いた際にはとても歩くのには危険です。住民たちと手を取り合い、北国の伝統的技術の雁木を使って被災者の士気を高めます。
近況：第一フェーズが完成し、第二フェーズで全ての階段と雁木が完成予定です。
PROJECTS UNDER DEVELOPMENT
Osaka Community Photo Studio
Location: Rikuzen-takata, Iwate Prefecture
Scope: Mr. Osaka, the owner of the Osaka Photo Studio, survived the tsunami by holding onto a bamboo in a forest about one mile away from the coast. He lost not only his studio and house for the tsunami but also his wife and daughter. He once thought he would quit everything, but the community encourage him to start his studio again.
Traditionally Japanese people go to a photo studio to have their portrait taken by a professional photographer at major milestones of their lives such as child birth, Shichi-go-san, entrance ceremonies for kindergarten and elementary school, Coming-of-age ceremony, wedding and so on. Mr. Osaka, has taken millions of pictures of people of Rikuzen-takata. He has seen babies growing up to become young men and women. Even after those young people move out of the town to work in Tokyo, they always come back to visit Mr. Osaka.
Mr. Osaka has recently appointed to become a chief of the volunteer fire corps of the district, and he manages about 1,000 volunteer firefighters. Though the city has its own fire department, the volunteer fire corps takes very important role not only in case of fire but also during any disaster or accidents. Mr. Osaka was the first person in Japan to come up with the idea of publicizing their needs on the Amazon Wishlist to collect items that the residents needed after the disaster.
Architecture for Humanity would like to help Mr. Osaka and the town of Rikuzen-takata to establish his studio as well as the hub of the community. This photo studio is not going to be an ordinary photo studio. It is going to become a place for the community member to gather and exchange their experience and knowledge.
Status: We are working with the client and a local architect to develop the concept of the community photo studio.
大坂写真館
住所：岩手県陸前高田市
概要：大坂写真館のオーナーでいらっしゃる大阪さんは、津波で流され、竹やぶの竹に捕まって難を逃れました。津波は自宅と写真館のみならず、娘さんと奥様も奪っていきました。震災後、一度は辞めてしまおうと思った写真館も、地元の仲間たちに励まされ、再開を決めました。
日本では子供の誕生や七五三、入園式や入学式、成人式や結婚式などの人生の節目で写真を撮る風習があります。大坂さんさんも、陸前高田でかなりの数の人たちの写真を取り続けてきました。生まれた頃から知っている子供たちも、やがて成人し都会に出て行ってからも、里帰りするたびに大阪さんを訪ねてくれるそうです。
地元消防団に所属する大阪さんは、つい最近支部団長に任命され、今では１千人もの団員を取り仕切るようになりました。市の消防署とならびに、消防団は火事や災害時にとても重要な役割を担います。震災後アマゾン欲しいものリストを公開し、消防団が被災者の方々に必要なものを届けるシステムを作ったのも大坂さんが第一人者でした。
アーキテクチャー・フォー・ヒューマニティは大坂さんと陸前高田の方々のために、地域の軸（ハブ）になるような写真館を作りたいと考えています。この写真館はただの写真館ではなく、地域住民の方々が訪れ、集い、語らう場になって欲しいと思っています。
近況：大坂さんと建築士の方と共にコンセプトつくりに取り掛かっています。
Tokura Community and Youth Center
Location: Tokura, Minami-sanriku-cho, Miyagi Prefecture
Scope: A community building for young and eldery people in a small fishing village.
Status: We are working with the community leader, Tokura Fukkou Shiendan, and the team from Miyagi University Architecture School.
戸倉コミュニティセンター
住所：宮城県本吉郡南三陸町戸倉地区
概要：子供たちとお年寄りに安全で心地よい居場所を作りたいと考えています。
近況：戸倉復興支援団と宮城大学建築学科の先生や生徒さんたちと共に、現在敷地の選定やコンセプトつくりを行っています。
Kitakami "We Are One" Collaborative
Location: Kitakami, Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture
Scope: A group of mothers would like to start a small business (a market) next to a youth center, so that they can watch their children while at work. This also serves children who do not have a safe place to play and study after school, and eldery people who cannot drive to get to the nearest market to shop fresh food.
Status: With the partnership with a local architect and a city hall representative, we are developing the project.
北上ウィー・アー・ワン・コラボラティブ
住所：宮城県石巻市北上地区
概要：被災されたお母さんたちが一丸となり、地域で必要とされている新鮮な野菜が手に入る直売場と、ご老人が集えるお茶飲み場、子供たちが安全に放課後を過ごせる児童館、その３つの機能を備えた施設を、地元の建築士の方と市役所の方の協力を得て建てる予定です。
Kazuma Youth Center
Location: Kazuma, Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture
Scope: The elementary school in Kazuma was one of few schools survived the disaster around the area. Many families stayed in the area so that students could stay in their school. However, they lost everything else including facilities for after-school activities. We are working with a local leader to provide students a place where they can play and study safely.
鹿妻ユースセンター
住所：宮城県石巻市鹿妻地区
概要：鹿妻地区の小学校は、地域でも震災後唯一無傷で残った学校です。そのため、多くの児童がまだこの地域に残っています。しかし、放課後を安全に過ごす場がありません。私たちは地域のリーダーとともに、そのような場を提供したいと考えています。
