Why Design Matters

The power of environmental influence on all aspects of life is too large to calculate. Neglecting the importance of efficiently designed spaces, is to neglect our control of a bright future for the world's communities. Good design means understanding that building a house or a school isn't just constructing shelter, but creating space for a people to live and grow independently, and efficiently.

At the heart of good design lies good planning. Unexpected natural disasters and ever-growing industry means durable infrastructure is more vital than ever. This makes the time spent analyzing and preparing to start a project, some of the most important hours in the design process. Events like the 2010 Haiti Earthquake, and the collapse of the garment factory in Bangladesh, April 2013, emphasize the importance of not only designing well, but building sustainably.

At Architecture for Humanity, we strive for community involvement in our design processes, encouraging all to take ownership of their spaces. Participatory design results in a more environmentally and culturally appropriate outcome. Our solutions marry the best of what is possible with the needs, desires, and cultural expectations of our clients.

Why Your Support Matters

Our goal is to provide planning, design and construction services to communities who might not otherwise be able to access the services of trained professionals. Most of our work is funded by partners, usually local community groups.
