Program Background:
You will join the Architecture for Humanity HQ team and assume a role in Haiti project support. The position will expose the candidate to all aspects of the headquarters including but not limited to, precedent research, graphic design and presentations, World Changing (formerly the Open Architecture Network) management, and interfacing with media and potential partners.

The first phase of the Akahama Covered Alley was completed on January 6, 2012. The Alley project was the second place winner of the first round of Build Back Better Tohoku, connecting hillside "temporary" residential units.

Three design teams were recognized by the 2012 Social Economic Environmental Design (SEED) competition. Maria Auxiliadora School in Ica, Peru, was named one of three international winners. The Kimisagara Football for Hope Center in Kigali, Rwanda, and Fresh Moves Mobile Market in Chicago, USA, were named honorable mentions.

At our Design Open Mic on January 18, 2012, Producer Lee Schneider visited Architecture for Humanity to talk about his feature documentary, Shelter, which highlights innovative humanitarian shelter design around the world. Lee was joined by staff member Caroline Markowitz, and together the two showed clips from their filming in Haiti, described production plans for 2012, and introduced Shelter: connect, the educational initiative of the film, which connects university design students in the U.S. with communities in need.

Lee discussed why Shelter has decided to open source the film and gather public feedback. Lee said they started the outreach initiative to spark the humanitarian-design movement in schools, find out what schools are already working on projects like this and help them make media.

Challengers

It's a new year and the end of registration is fast approaching (see below). Not sure if you've noticed, but we've been getting a bit of media surrounding the Challenge - expect more now that we've surpassed 125 teams in over 40 countries, with the highest representation coming from Iran (see also below)...which makes it tricky for us, because we don't exactly speak Farsi....All right, we'll try

At Design Open Mic on January 11, 2012, Architecture for Humanity Program Manager Sandhya Naidu Janardhan gave us an update on Rebuilding Haiti two years after the devastating earthquake. Then Lisa Smyth, who started working with Architecture for Humanity in Haiti as a volunteer and recently earned a well-deserved design fellowship, spoke to us about “the other side of Haiti” - the challenges of rebuilding an impoverished community versus the natural beauty and culture of a Caribbean Island.

Architecture for Humanity, Haiti, is pleased to announce the selection of the winning artists for the first round of schools for the Civic Art in Schools Program. Selections are made following a Request for Qualifications issued last Summer, and responses from dozens from artist communities around the country.

Last weekend, hundreds of young people from across Japan converged for 'Gift by Gift for a Better World', a 3-day workshop held at S-pal Square, Sendai Train Station in Sendai, Japan. The centerpiece of the workshop was the magnificent Paper Crane Sculpture, designed by students at Tohoku University of Art & Design and composed of 100,000 of the 2 million paper cranes folded by Paper Cranes for Japan participants in the wake of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami.
