Architecture for Humanity, in partnership with the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), is seeking its next candidate for its' Sustainability Design Fellowship to participate in the Haiti Earthquake Recovery.

The full-time position is based in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The candidate must be a licensed architect and full member of the AIA, as well as a LEED accredited professional. The AIA/USGBC Sustainability Design Fellow position, currently held by Stacey McMahan, AIA, LEED AP, plays a critical role within the Architecture for Humanity Haiti team, providing not only targeted strategies on sustainability and its role in recovery, but overall leadership to the Haiti studio. The Sustainability Design Fellow is expected to carry this leadership outside the studio as well, and be a resource for partners, students, and contractors seeking more sustainable strategies for Haiti. Architecture for Humanity has established an office of 15 professionals and 10 support staff in Port au Prince, Haiti, following the devastating 2010 earthquake. Our design professionals are working at designing and building both schools and small businesses, as well as conducting a wide variety of training, capacity building and outreach services. The Sustainability Design Fellow will be act as both a manager and a design leader within the studio.

The Sustainability Design Fellow will be required to liaise with partner NGOs and community partners, as well as represent Architecture for Humanity, the American Institute of Architects and the U.S. Green Building Council at various conferences and forums.

Requirements of the position are:

• Be a licensed architect in the United States.

• Be a full member of the AIA.
• Be a LEED accredited professional.
• Have a minimum of 10 years of experience in the professional practice of architecture, covering all phases of design and construction.
• Have significant supervisory experience
• Have a valid passport and be able to freely travel between the U.S. and Haiti.
• International travel live/work/experience is desired but not required.
• Proficiency in French language is desired, but not required.
• Must be comfortable speaking on behalf of Architecture for Humanity and its funders to the media and at other public events.

Duties:

• Engage the community, funding partner and clients at all stages of the design process

• Assist with site selection
• Provide tools and training for safe and sustainable construction to mitigate seismic and hurricane activities.
• Produce schematic designs and design development drawings
• Identify and work with local architects, engineers, consultants and programmatic staff, increasing local professional capacity through training and assistance
• Provide some construction administration including managing bidding processes as necessary and overseeing work done by contractors and sub-contractors
• Provide administrative sup[port for invoicing, cost reporting, meeting coordination and other tasks
• Make timely reports to clients, partners and funders on the progress of the project as required.
• Document project progress on the Open Architecture Network.
• Keep Architecture for Humanity informed of any issues that arise at any point during the process
• Work diplomatically with all partners and keep partners informed of the progress of the project on a regular basis.
• Represent the best interests of Architecture for Humanity and its funders.

Commitment:
The Sustainable Design Fellow will live and work in Port-au-Prince, Haiti for a minimum of 12 months. Travel within Haiti is expected.
