Finalists Announced for the Open Architecture Challenge

Eight teams were recognized today as finalists of the 2009 Open Architecture Challenge: Classroom. Finalists submitted designs ranging from an outdoor classroom for children in inner-city Chicago, learning spaces for the children of salt pan workers in India, safe spaces for youth in Bogota, Colombia, a bamboo classroom in the Himalayan mountains. Congratulations to the eight teams!

Biloxi Model Home Program

We completed the Robinson House last week, and Andre Robinson was able to move into his house. We were sad to hear the news of Audrey Robinson's passing, our thoughts are with her family in these difficult times. This week we continue work on the last home for Richard Tyler.

As Tommy Calhoun, our design fellow on the ground says: "I have had an enlightening experience down here, and learned a vast amount about myself, my work, and other human beings, which equals time well spent. Despite what the inspectors and naysayers may say, I believe in this project and these houses, and am committed to making it happen and getting these things done the right way. I feel very positive about this."

Architecture for Humanity is one of the few groups currently working in Myanmar. Our talented design team has been restoring and rebuilding coastal villages affected by last years' cyclone.

Anand Sheth, one of our SF design fellows, worked on our post-Cyclone Nargis campaign last year. On August 8th, his friends are holding a surprise 21st birthday party and have asked everyone coming to bring donations for this project, instead of presents.

10th Year Anniversary: Letter from Scott Mattoon

Dear Architecture For Humanity,

I first met Kate Stohr in one of the early planning meetings for the Open Architecture Network (OAN). That was October 2006. I was in my first semester at Presidio School of Management studying sustainable business, while also working at Sun Microsystems as an Architect (not the licensed kind that designs buildings, but the virtual geeky kind that works on Internet systems designs). It was through Sun's support of Cameron's 2006 TED Prize wish that I got connected to this project and Kate was my first contact with AFH. It was immediately clear to me that Kate and the rest of AFH were doing something relevant, unique, and valuable, so I was excited to help in any way I could.

Kenyan School to get worlds' first Net Positive Basketball Court

On June 14th Elaine Uang and Cameron Sinclair met with the Mahiga Primary and Secondary School students and teachers to formally announce the 'Net Positive' court as the second recipient of Gamechangers funding. Both schools are located near the Aberdare mountain range and are suffering though an extended drought.

This multi-purpose court will collect enough drinkable rainwater to allow over 400 children to attend both schools. check out a slideshow of the event here

The school is also being supported by The Nobelity Project.

SIDAREC finds a home.

Capital News - Thousands of Nairobi children will cross the digital divide and access a global network of opportunity courtesy of a state-of-the art community center launched at Mukuru Kwa Njenga slum.

The community center was custom-designed for Slums Information Development Resource Center (SIDAREC) and the needs of Nairobi youth, including access to the Internet, computer and technology training, health clinic services, early childhood development programs, and a community theater.

Greywater Gureillas: Dispatch from the Water Underground

Laura Allen of Greywater Guerrilas stopped by today to give us the lowdown on recycling greywater and the new draft permitting rules on the table in California to encourage rainwater harvesting and catchment systems. She offered some practical advice on installing residential greywater systems (three-way valve, anyone?) and some background on commercial systems. We'll never look at a toilet or washing machine the same way again.

Football For Hope

Construction for the first Football for Hope Centre in the Khayelitsha township of Cape Town has started in May. This 200 square meter building and adjacent 20x40 meter artificial turf pitch, constructed by Drucan, will enable local organisations in underprivileged communities to promote education and public health through football-related programmes. The Centre Host is the South Africa-based organisation Grassroot Soccer that uses football as a tool to fight HIV/AIDS. The centre, designed by local Cape Town architects arG Design, is slated to be completed in November 2009, in time for the Football for Hope Centre Kick Off inauguration ceremony on December 5th immediately following the 2010 FIFA World Cup South AfricaTM Final Draw.
