Program Background
Architecture for Humanity loves looking at beautiful buildings, so we decided to preserve each of our own designs through the efforts of the Architecture for Humanity Model Making Program. This year we have the opportunity to showcase two of our projects at the Milan Design Week. To make this happen, we are seeking two expert model makers who can pull this extraordinary feat off in the next month.

The Songs for Christchurch album is launching this Sunday (12pm to 6pm) with a fantastic gig at Re:START CHCH City Mall! Show your support at the gig, and remember to buy a copy of the album.

Architecture Design Fellows – Hurricane Sandy Reconstruction

In the closing days of October 2012, Hurricane Sandy moved up the Atlantic seaboard and turned toward New Jersey striking and destroying many coastal towns. The storm moved north and created a storm surge that has devastated the New York Metro area.

Architecture for Humanity's Reconstruction and Resiliency team is on the ground planning for long-term reconstruction. Two Design Fellow opportunities are immediately available:

Maeami-hama Community House is mostly done and will be opening very soon! An opening ceremony is scheduled for this coming Sunday, and final inspection on Monday. See the latest pictures below.

We all know today's youngest generation gets a lot of heat for being brought up in such a tech focused world. Constantly, we hear that they are lazy, unmotivated and, unlike generations before, refuse to do anything other than sit in front of a screen. But here's a question, how can we expect otherwise, when all they have been offered is exactly what they are criticized for?

We decided to answer this with another question:
Given the proper motivation and support, what is this underestimated generation capable of?

The response to this counter-ask came in the form of ideas, from teens all across the United States. School being their most vital environment, we challenged students to come up with ways to better their learning spaces, in the eco-friendliest of fashions.

Since March 11, 2011, contributions to the Japan Reconstruction Program have assisted in the improvement of hundreds of lives throughout the Tohoku region of Japan. MakiBiz, Architecture for Humanity’s regional support center, has assisted over 30 small business owners get back on their feet and many more people continue to need our help.

On Thursday, February 14th, Yves Francois (YCF Group), Abe Lynn (Degenkolb), and Kate Evarts (AFH) organized a brief talk and walkthrough with the students of CIM about the new building that's currently under construction.

IF YOU ever wondered what a day at HQ was like, a volunteer undertook an independent time lapse project. It's certainly no Day in the Field, but we're excited to slave away at our computers :) in our beautiful new office space at 695 Minna in San Francisco (which we're arranging to celebrate in April).

Program coordination and administration are no easy tasks - thanks to everyone at HQ for sharing a slice of life as context for all our conversations.
