10th Year Anniversary: Letter From Steve Meier

Architecture for Humanity,

I met Cameron and Kate during the summer of 2001 when we were living in New York City. We had been introduced by a mutual friend -- a classmate of mine from law school. Cameron and Kate were looking for a lawyer to help them legally establish Architecture for Humanity and obtain 501(c)(3) status. I had been practicing law for less than three years at the time, but I was game for the challenge of helping AFH get on all fours, and Kate and Cameron were game for the challenge of being represented by a well meaning but somewhat inexperienced attorney.

Plastiki takes shape, highlighted in ODE

Designers Nathaniel Corum and Michael Jones continue their journey to design the cabin for the Plastiki, a 60-foot catamaran made of 12,000 plastic bottles and other recycled materials, that will sail from San Francisco to Sydney later this year.

Former Siyathemba finalist MOOV placed in Re:Vision Dallas

Today Urban Re:Vision announced three finalists for what might become the most sustainable city block in America. Situated in the heart of Dallas three teams were selected from hundreds of entries as part of the
Revision Dallas design competition

Ideas integrated local materials, vegetated screens to green ways, shaping how people will live and work in the future. Finalists include former Siyathemba finalist MOOV with Atelier Data of Lisbon, Portugal; David Baker and Partners Architects and Fletcher Studio (with renderings support from our friends at Medized) and the firm Little from Charlotte, North Carolina

10th Year Anniversary: Letter From Chuck Lauster

"In 1999 the fighting in Kosovo was at a peak and tens of thousands of refugees were fleeing. Their prospects looked grim. Cameron Sinclair was then an architect in our office and he asked a simple question, “What can architects do to ease this misery?” Then he answered it, “Not much really, but they can design." So began an architectural call for ideas from around the world on how to build temporary refugee housing. It was also the beginning of Architecture For Humanity."

Kickturns in Kabul: Skateboard park to be built in Afghanistan

Architecture for Humanity and Nike are proud to announce the first recipient of the GAMECHANGERS funding to Skateistan, based in Kabul, Afghanistan. Afghanistan’s first co-educational skateboarding school was established in May 2007 and offers free skateboarding classes for all youth in Kabul through a team of dedicated international and Afghan volunteers. With funding assistance from a range of funding sources the program is about to build Kabul’s first indoor skate park at Ghazi Stadium.

10th Year Anniversary: Letter From Chuck Lauster

Architecture for Humanity,

In 1999 the fighting in Kosovo was at a peak and tens of thousands of refugees from the fighting were fleeing to camps. Their prospects looked grim. Cameron Sinclair was then an architect in our office. One day he asked a simple question, “What can architects do to ease this misery?” Then he answered it, “Not much really, but they can design.” So began an architectural call for ideas from around the world on how to build temporary refugee housing. It was also the beginning of Architecture for Humanity.

The resulting competition was extraordinary. A jury was selected that included architects, like Steven Holl, Todd Williams and Billie Tsien, experts on refugees and disaster relief professionals. With a simple web page, the competition sought submissions from around the world. Entry fees from entrants were donated to War Child, the children’s relief organization. Over two hundred arrived in our office.

But this is just the beginning of a year of celebration as we embark on a fundraising campaign to support our chapters, grow the Open Architecture Network and bring critical design services to more communities in need.
