On June 14th Elaine Uang and Cameron Sinclair met with the Mahiga Primary and Secondary School students and teachers to formally announce the 'Net Positive' court as the second recipient of Gamechangers funding. Both schools are located near the Aberdare mountain range and are suffering though an extended drought.

This multi-purpose court will collect enough drinkable rainwater to allow over 400 children to attend both schools. check out a slideshow of the event here

Capital News - Thousands of Nairobi children will cross the digital divide and access a global network of opportunity courtesy of a state-of-the art community center launched at Mukuru Kwa Njenga slum.

The community center was custom-designed for Slums Information Development Resource Center (SIDAREC) and the needs of Nairobi youth, including access to the Internet, computer and technology training, health clinic services, early childhood development programs, and a community theater.

Construction for the first Football for Hope Centre in the Khayelitsha township of Cape Town has started in May. This 200 square meter building and adjacent 20x40 meter artificial turf pitch, constructed by Drucan, will enable local organisations in underprivileged communities to promote education and public health through football-related programmes. The Centre Host is the South Africa-based organisation Grassroot Soccer that uses football as a tool to fight HIV/AIDS. The centre, designed by local Cape Town architects arG Design, is slated to be completed in November 2009, in time for the Football for Hope Centre Kick Off inauguration ceremony on December 5th immediately following the 2010 FIFA World Cup South AfricaTM Final Draw.

Architecture for Humanity,

I met Cameron and Kate during the summer of 2001 when we were living in New York City. We had been introduced by a mutual friend -- a classmate of mine from law school. Cameron and Kate were looking for a lawyer to help them legally establish Architecture for Humanity and obtain 501(c)(3) status. I had been practicing law for less than three years at the time, but I was game for the challenge of helping AFH get on all fours, and Kate and Cameron were game for the challenge of being represented by a well meaning but somewhat inexperienced attorney.

The submission period for the 2009 Open Architecture Challenge is now over. Tens of thousands of architects, designers, teachers and students collaborated to create the classroom of the future. We are stunned by the response and the quality of designs submitted. To all of you, Thank You.
