The "Recomeçar" project in Niteroi is part of the Enel Community Empowerment Program. The project is currently developed in Brazil by Architecture for Humanity with the local support of Endesa –Brasil .

The Recomeçar Project is the only existing daycare in the marginalized Ititioca neighborhood of Niterói, Brazil. The neighborhood is adjacent to an informal settlement which was largely destroyed by devastating floods and landslides that over 200 deaths in April 2010. The project was started by two local residents saw the need for a local daycare centre that would allow the women of the area to find work, in particular those that that had become the primary providers for their families after the disaster. Thanks to financial support from the Brazilian Department of Education, the centre quickly became a hub for the entire local community; doubling as a facility for English, capoeira and literacy classes for adults.
Currently, however, the extremely poor quality of the existing structures (overcrowding and lack natural light and ventilation) means that the buildings fail to meet local building codes and the school must relocate to a new building before the end of 2013 or risk loss of funding and closure.

This project aims to build a new school/daycare center that exceeds the Department of Education’s criteria and provides its infant and adult students with a healthy and uplifting learning environment. There are 93 children currently enrolled at the school, from ages 2 to 6. The architectural program of the future building includes four classrooms, library, theatre, TV and activity rooms. Also it will include bathrooms, kitchen and dining room and a playground area. Thanks to a donated site, the daycare centre will also finally gain secure land tenure and be able to operate from its own, purpose built facility.

ARCHITECTURE FOR HUMANITY
The role of Architecture for Humanity is essential throughout all the project development stages. The first step is to analyze the feasibility of the project in order to design an appropriate building that relates to the existing context and the community can take full ownership of the project. Architecture for Humanity is managing the design, construction and construction administration of the school, making sure that the project represents the community’s objectives and the project is developed within schedule and budget. The role of Architecture for Humanity also consists in post-occupancy services in order to build a quality infrastructure that will be sustainable and used by the Ititioca neighborhood children and adolescents for many years to come.
