Related program: Football for Hope
Another Football for Hope center, Mogalakwena (aka Mokopane), opened its doors (and its turf) on March 08, 2013. About 250 people attended the event on International Women’s Day, and the first players to hit this field -- all girls.
The Opening Ceremony hosted by the Red Cross was, to say the least, a success. Representatives of local and provincial government were present as well as streetfootballworld and FIFA. A keynote address, by Member of the Executive Council (MEC) Ms. Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba for the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture on behalf of the premier of Limpopo Province, spoke about the rights of all women, a community’s role in honoring those rights, and this center as a place of importance, a resource for the community (especially youth) and a place of support.
Despite heavy rains, the community showed their support by cheering the players on and, of course, enjoying beverages to compliment performances by local entertainers.
Congratulations to the entire Football for Hope team, but especially to Design Fellow Themba Mekwa for all his hard work and dedication. We’ll miss having him on the team.
