"High June" 2013: Dwell on Design & AIA National Convention

Don't miss us this week in both Denver and Los Angeles (but good luck catching us both places)

Conference season has shifted into full gear. We'd like to share a couple opportunities to mingle with professional peers, attend some insightful discussions and get a dose of Architecture for Humanity in-person, at Dwell in Design in Los Angeles (June 21-23) and at the American Institute of Architects National Convention in Denver (June 19-22).

We're continuing our partnership with molo design for our conference circuit this year - who are kitting out both the AIA and Dwell in Design trade floor booths as comfortable (and collapsible) places to mingle and trade tales of design and architecture.

At TEDx: "A Simple Proposition for the Value of Design"

Preserving architecture as a profession will mean reversing some disturbing trends.

So says Eric Cesal who, when he's not directing the Resiliency and Reconstruction Studio at Architecture for Humanity, is tracking the value of design and architecture in its use around the world. Little surprise that the two (pre)occupations are related.

After looking at some recession statistics, Eric concluded that the world may view design as not valuable. He has evidence to the contrary, and delivered a talk recently at TEDx Piscataqua River (Portsmouth, NH) reviewing his work since he first addressed the value of architecture in Down Detour Road, through how design decisions have changed the lives of thousands in places like post-earthquake Haiti.

Small but Mighty: Insight into the Sioux Falls chapter

In Sioux Falls, South Dakota the impact of the local chapter of Architecture for Humanity is peppered throughout the city.

An affordable housing competition not only challenges the local design professionals, but its results are directly benefiting Sioux Falls families. A garden shelter on a hospital campus serves as a resting place for weary gardeners, who have been flocking to the project. The chapter has numerous well-used built projects around the city, and has plans set in place even more. While the chapter recently suffered a relocation of three out of its four founding members, its aims are set no less high for becoming a municipal staple for design engagment.

Kristen Schulte and Steven Dix recently spoke with Headquarters about the chapter's story, their work, and their plans for growth. You can check out some of their work on the I Love Architecture page.
