In the closing days of October, 2012, Hurricane Sandy carved a path through the Caribbean before moving up the Atlantic and turning into New Jersey, striking many coastal towns. The storm moved north and created a storm surge that has devastated the New York Metro area. There has been widespread major damage and loss of life.
Architecture for Humanity's reconstruction plan will focus on communities with the greatest need for design and construction services. Architecture for Humanity believes in rebuilding sustainably and more resilient to protect these areas from future storms. This program focuses on areas listed below.

Sustainability & Resiliency
With the changing climate, extreme weather will continue to affect these coastal areas. It is important that all buildings, from housing to businesses, schools and community facilities, are designed and retrofitted to withstand future events. We will provide resources for homeowners to understand the value of sustainable and resilient building, and will ensure that all projects are built to the highest sustainability and resiliency standards.
We will always work alongside communities to ensure that the voice of local stakeholders are heard. Through leading periodic discussions through the facilitation of events such as community charrettes, we will work together in creating a shared vision of the future.
Education & Sports
Flood waters caused severe damage to schools, including gymnasiums, sports fields, and recreational facilities. Students continue to attend schools with incomplete resources. Providing access to sports is of strong importance in building ties between individuals and promoting physical and mental health. We will assist these schools in building back better.
Small businesses were particularly affected by the storm. We are looking to focus on main commercial corridors such as boardwalks, to restore and enhance the function and feel of theses communities, to support their continued development.
Support communities who need to rebuild by donating and sharing our message with your friends and family. Thank you in advance for your support.
